메시아라는 낱말은 히브리 말로서 ‘기름 부음을 받은 사람’이라는 뜻인데, 특히 왕(王)을 의미하는 말이다. 이스라엘 선민(選民)들은 그의 선지자(先知者)들의 예언에 의하여 장차 이스라엘을 구원하실 구세주(救世主)를 왕으로 보내마고 하신 하나님의 말씀을 믿고 있었으니, 이것이 곧 이스라엘의 메시아사상이다. 이러한 메시아로 오셨던 분이 바로 예수 그리스도이신데, 이 ‘그리스도’란 말은 메시아와 같은 뜻의 헬라어로서 보통 구세주로 통한다.
The word “Messiah” in Hebrew means the “anointed one,” signifying a king. The chosen people of Israel believed in the Word of God as revealed through the prophets, which promised that God would send them a king and savior. Such was their messianic expectation. God sent this Messiah in the person of Jesus Christ. “Christ” is the Greek word for Messiah.
메시아는 하나님의 구원섭리(救援攝理)의 목적을 이루시기 위하여 오셔야 한다. 이처럼 인간에게 구원이 필요하게 된 것은 인간이 타락(墮落)했기 때문이다. 그러므로 구원에 관한 문제를 해결하기 위하여는 먼저 타락에 관한 문제를 알아야 한다. 그런데 타락은 곧 하나님의 창조목적을 이루지 못하게 된 것을 의미하는 것이므로, 타락에 관한 문제를 논하기 전에 우리는 먼저 창조목적에 관한 문제를 해명하지 않으면 아니 되는 것이다.
The Messiah comes to fulfill the purpose of God’s work of salvation. Human beings need salvation because of the Fall. Hence, before we can clarify the meaning of salvation, we must first understand the matter of the Fall. Furthermore, since the Fall implies the failure to accomplish God’s purpose of creation, before we can clarify the significance of the Fall, we must first understand the purpose of creation.
하나님의 창조목적(創造目的)은 먼저 지상에 천국이 건설됨으로써 이루어지게 되어 있었다. 그러나 인간의 타락으로 말미암아 지상천국(地上天國)은 이루어지지 않고 지상지옥(地上地獄)이 이루어졌던 것이다. 그 후 하나님은 이것을 복귀하시려는 섭리를 거듭해 내려오셨다. 따라서 인류역사는 복귀섭리역사(復歸攝理歷史)이기 때문에 이 역사의 목적은 먼저 지상에 천국을 복귀하려는 데 있다. 우리는 이와 같은 문제들을 이미 전편 제3장 제1절과 제2절에서 상세히 논술한 바 있는 것이다.
God’s purpose of creation was to be fulfilled with the establishment of the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. However, due to the human Fall, we have built hell on earth in place of God’s Kingdom. Since the Fall, God has been repeatedly working His providence to restore the Kingdom. Being the history of the providence of restoration, human history’s primary goal is to establish the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. (cf. Eschatology 1-2)
