Etymology
知 (지) – to know
識 (식) – knowledge

For people, knowledge is the light of life holding the power of revival, while ignorance is the shadow of death and the cause of ruin. Ignorance cannot beget true sentiments, and in the absence of knowledge and emotion the will to act cannot arise. Without the proper functioning of emotion, intellect and will, one cannot live the life of a true human being.

There are two aspects of knowledge: spiritual knowledge, revealed to us through religion, and external knowledge, which we acquire through science. Accordingly, it is possible to say that there are two sides of intellect: the internal intellect, awakened by spiritual knowledge, and the external intellect, awakened by external knowledge.

Those who have knowledge must sincerely serve those who are in ignorance.
