Etymology
基 (기) – foundation, base
準 (준) – standard

With a standard, we can determine what is right and what is wrong. When a problem arises, we only have to check against the standard.

If we do not have a standard in front of us, any comparison will not be accurate. A measure of length, such as a meter, has its own standard. We can calculate any deviation from the standard. We refer to the standard when we need to find support for our arguments.

In life, we have certain rules and norms. If we compare something to the standard and the result is higher than the norm, we call it a success, and if it is lower than the norm, we call it a failure. In the case of complete failure, when we cannot even compare the result with the norm, all evaluation becomes impossible.

What, then, within the universe is the fundamental standard for measuring value? Is the standard gold or diamonds? The standard is unchanging and indestructible love. Seemingly fragile, love does not break. In your mind you can control it, but in reality it is not. Love is an integral part of you. Love is the standard of your appreciation, rather than the other way around.

The standard of goodness is unselfishness and care for the common good. A good person is unselfish and has a way to Heaven. When you live by this principle, you will not come into conflict with others.

Blessed are those who, with an unchanging inner standard of heart, honor Heaven, build harmonious relationships with people, and love the earth.
