心 (심) [sim] – heart

A good person is one who sympathizes with those who are sad, as if he himself were sad. When you meet a person who evokes pity, your heart must be filled with compassion in order to share his tears and help him practically. If you sympathize with others, compensate for their sorrows by giving them joy, then you can be an example of a good person in any situation.

We need to sympathize with those who are in trouble and suffering, as if trouble had happened to us ourselves. If we are ahead of everyone else in loving others, then we will have a strong vitality within us with which we can overcome the most severe trials.

Showing compassion for a person is a manifestation of God’s Shimjeon, the parental shimjeon. Suppose a mother has two sons, one of whom has a disability, and the other became the president of the country. Which child will the mother’s heart turn to first?

The same principle applies to husband and wife relationships. If your spouse is not as wonderful and capable as you expected, then your heart should go to his heart in the desire to comfort, support and help your spouse. Your heart should be like a parent’s heart for their child.

May your heart always be full of kindness and compassion.
